MTN Nigeria

The listing that proved Nigerian retail investors would show up

MTN Nigeria's arrival on the exchange put one of the country's most-used brands into ordinary portfolios, and it is still the reference point every Nigerian offer gets measured against.

How buying works in Nigeria

  1. 1

    Choose a licensed dealing member

Only firms on the NGX dealing-member list or the SEC register can place your order. Check the list yourself rather than trusting a referral.

  2. 2

Complete KYC and get a CSCS account

The broker opens the CSCS account for you. Expect to provide BVN, NIN, photo ID, a passport photograph, a signature specimen, a utility bill under three months old, your bank details and next-of-kin information.

  3. 3

    Fund the account

Transfer from a Nigerian bank account in your own name. Never pay an individual, and never pay a fee to be allowed to buy shares.

  4. 4

    Place the order

For a public offer, subscribe through NGX Invest or an authorised receiving agent. For shares already listed, place a limit order through your broker.

  5. 5

    Settlement and allotment

Ordinary trades settle within a few business days. Public offers settle after the offer closes, and if the offer is oversubscribed you may be allotted fewer shares than you applied for, with the balance refunded.

  6. 6

    Keep your records current

Update your bank details and contact information with the registrar. Unclaimed dividends in Nigeria overwhelmingly trace back to stale shareholder records.
