Too $hort sold tapes neighborhood to neighborhood.
Before platinum records, Too $hort moved through Oakland selling homemade tapes himself.
He recalled starting with tapes in a paper bag, riding the bus, getting off and walking neighborhood to neighborhood before eventually selling from a car.
Today we would call it direct-to-fan distribution. Back then it was literally direct to fan.
The distribution network was his own two feet. Somewhere right now, an artist is doing the digital equivalent.
